My personal selection of where to eat and drink in Bologna
If you’re wondering where to eat in Bologna, this guide will help you discover some of the best local restaurants and authentic food spots in the city.
Bologna is considered the food capital of Italy, but with the growing number of visitors it can sometimes be difficult to find truly authentic places.
In this guide I share restaurants and food spots that I personally recommend as a local guide born and raised in Bologna.
In the last few years Bologna has changed a lot. More and more travelers have discovered the city, which is wonderful because Bologna truly deserves to be known around the world.
However, like many popular destinations, the growth of tourism has also created a small challenge: it has become harder to distinguish truly authentic places from restaurants that are designed mainly for tourists. Many new spots have opened recently, but not all of them reflect the real culinary tradition of the city.
For this reason, in this guide I want to recommend places that I personally know and trust. I was born and raised in Bologna, and these are places I have visited many times over the years. They represent the real spirit of the city’s food culture.
Below you will find my personal selection of where to eat and drink in Bologna.

Something Sweet in Bologna
If you have a sweet tooth, Bologna offers some historic places that locals still love.
Majani Chocolate Shop
One of the most historic chocolate shops in Bologna is Majani, founded in 1796.
It is famous for its traditional chocolates, especially the Cremino Fiat, created in 1911.
If you love chocolate, this is a place you should absolutely visit.
Caffè Gamberini
If you are looking for a classic Italian pastry shop, Caffè Gamberini is one of the most elegant historic cafés in the city.
Here you can enjoy traditional pastries, excellent coffee, and a beautiful atmosphere that still reflects the Bologna of the past.
Sebastiano Caridi Pastry Lab
For something more modern, I recommend the pastry shop by Sebastiano Caridi. Caridi is known for his refined pastries and creative desserts, combining Italian tradition with contemporary techniques.

Traditional Restaurants in Bologna
When visitors ask me where to eat traditional Bolognese food, I usually suggest places that still preserve a strong connection with the city’s culinary heritage.
Trattoria da Cesari
Da Cesari is one of the historic restaurants in the city center.
Here you can taste classic dishes such as:
-Tagliatelle al ragù
-Tortellini in brodo
-Cotoletta alla bolognese
The atmosphere is simple, traditional, and very Bolognese.
Trattoria Teresina
Teresina is another traditional restaurant that locals appreciate for its authentic cooking.
The menu focuses on classic dishes of Bolognese cuisine, prepared in a simple and genuine way.
It is a great place if you want to experience traditional food outside the most touristy spots.
A Different Option: Seafood: Osteria Bartolini
Even though Bologna is famous for its meat-based cuisine, sometimes you may want something different.
Osteria Bartolini specializes in seafood, especially fried fish served in a very informal style.
It is a fun and relaxed place that offers a nice alternative to traditional Bolognese dishes.

Where to Drink in Bologna
Finally, no food guide would be complete without mentioning where locals like to stop for a drink.
Osteria del Sole
Founded in 1465, Osteria del Sole is one of the oldest wine bars in Bologna.
The atmosphere is simple and lively. Locals and visitors gather here to drink wine together, often bringing food from nearby shops.
It is one of the most authentic social experiences in the city.
Enoteca Faccioli
If you prefer a quieter place with a great wine selection, Enoteca Fagioli is a wonderful option.
It is a classic Bolognese wine bar where you can enjoy excellent Italian wines in a relaxed and authentic atmosphere.

Where to Eat a Charcuterie Board in Bologna
One of the simplest and most delicious food experiences in Bologna is enjoying a tagliere, a charcuterie board with local cured meats such as prosciutto, mortadella and salami.
The best area for this is the historic Quadrilatero Market, the oldest market district of the city. It is full of small shops and delicatessens where locals have been buying food for generations. Here are two places that I personally recommend.
Simoni is one of the most historic delicatessens in the Quadrilatero area.
You can find their shop in Via Pescherie Vecchie, but they also have a small space where you can sit and taste their products.
My recommendation is simple: order a tagliere with prosciutto and mortadella, and enjoy it with a glass of Lambrusco, the traditional sparkling red wine of Emilia-Romagna.
It’s one of the most authentic food experiences in Bologna.
Another historic place in the Quadrilatero is La Baita.
This small shop has been part of the market for many years and offers a wide selection of traditional cured meats and cheeses.
It’s a great place not only to taste local products but also to buy authentic Bolognese specialties to take home.

Where to Eat Pizza in Bologna
Even though pizza is traditionally associated with Naples, Bologna also has some excellent options.
L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele
If you are looking for classic Neapolitan pizza, the best option in Bologna is L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele.
This famous pizzeria from Naples opened a location in Bologna and quickly became one of the reference points for high-quality pizza in the city.
Their menu is simple, focusing on traditional pizzas like Margherita and Marinara, prepared with excellent ingredients.
Fiore Mio
If you are exploring the city and want a quick and delicious snack, you can stop at Fiore Mio.
They specialize in pizza al taglio (pizza by the slice), which is perfect for a quick lunch or an afternoon break while walking through the historic center.
Pizzeria Altero
Another iconic place in the city center is Pizzeria Altero.
This historic takeaway pizzeria is especially popular late at night, when locals stop here for a quick slice after a drink in the city center.
It’s simple, informal, and very much part of Bologna’s nightlife culture.

Elegant Restaurants for Dinner
If you are looking for a more refined dining experience, Bologna also offers some excellent restaurants that combine high-quality cuisine with elegant settings.
Ristorante I Carracci
Ristorante I Carracci is located inside the historic Grand Hotel Majestic, the oldest hotel in Bologna.
The dining room is famous for its stunning frescoed ceiling, creating one of the most beautiful restaurant settings in the city.
The cuisine combines traditional Emilian flavors with a more refined and contemporary approach.
Ristorante The Portici
Located on Via Indipendenza, Ristorante The Portici offers a modern fine dining experience.
The restaurant is known for its creative cuisine and elegant atmosphere, making it a great choice for a special dinner in Bologna.
Where to Eat in Bologna City Center
If you are staying near Piazza Maggiore, you will find many excellent restaurants and traditional food shops within walking distance.
The historic center of Bologna is very compact, and many of the best places to eat are located around the Quadrilatero market, one of the oldest food districts in the city.
Simoni
One of the most historic delicatessens in the Quadrilatero market, Simoni is a great place to enjoy a traditional charcuterie board with mortadella, prosciutto and other local specialties. Pair it with a glass of Lambrusco for a classic Bolognese experience.
Da Cesari
Trattoria da Cesari is one of the classic restaurants in the historic center of Bologna. Here you can enjoy traditional dishes such as tortellini in broth and tagliatelle al ragù in a simple and authentic atmosphere.
